Jan Winroth

Senior lecturer

I´m now working in a program in Health Promotion. This is a three-year program leading to a degree of Bachelor of social science with the major in Health Promotion. I was one who started this program in 1988. I´m also working in another Bachelor program with the title “Management & Health Promotion”.

Besides the programmes I also work with courses in workplace health promotion and management and leadership. Some are University courses and some are connected to different companies and enterprises.

Before I came to the University I have worked as a health promotion professional in the company Vattenfall (about 10 000 employees) for 14 years - both with strategically and practical issues. The practical work was focused on physical activities, stress management, health profile assessment and also training and education for the management level.

My educational background is a sports and leisure management training, a Bachelor degree in sports education, have written a master thesis in the same subject and also undergone postgraduate and doctoral studies in the same discipline.

The areas I have worked with in over 30 years are health of individual, group and organizational level. The role has been as a performer, consultant and researcher. The focus has been how to translate ideas and known knowledge (for example theories and research results) to the application and practice. What is driving forces and obstacles? What is required to achieve results? My experiences and knowledge has mainly developed by working with courses and education in the area by assisting with longer processes (3 years or more) in five different organizations and working with management and leadership issues. Some of my experiences have I documented in a textbook entitled “Health & Health Promotion – with focus on individual, group and organizational level” (2008, third edition) and I have also presented some papers at different international conferences – five world conferences organized by IUHPE and five Nordic research conferences. Here some headlines on the papers that I have presented:

  • Evaluation of the Health Promotion project “NCC – Builds Healthily” (1995)
  • Development of a tree-year University Programme oriented towards Health Promotion (1995)
  • Health promotion at the workplace – A successful example from Sweden (1998)
  • Health promotion at the workplace – From Idea to Action – Two examples (2000)
  • Health promotion leadership – A one year programme in Gothenburg for managers in the public sector (2003)
  • Workplace health promotion – from policy development to action program and implementation (2004)
  • Developing workplace health promotion (WHP) at the strategically level – lessens to learn, A comparison between a process driven intervention and a project approach (2007)
  • Leadership and workplace Health Promotion – A working model (2007)
